A Poem…”On Online Love”

Without the tension

We wouldn’t have to mention

That loving online

Isn’t always so fine

Because we know for a fact

That it’s easy to act

When you’re halfway across the planet

And your face is just a pic

Be you Brad or be you Janet

A guy or some cute chick

You can fall for a bunch

Of text on your screen

and your heart can be aching

For someone you’ve never seen

So take my recommendation

And listen good and hard

If you look for love online

You better be smart

If you’re looking for some email

To make your heart melt

Then get ready to be steady

And buckle that seat belt!

A Poem: “Faith Dies and Love Flees to Where?”

The World is changing…

The world is forever changing

From “Lisa” to “tower” to iPod to iPad

From Blackberry to Schmackberry

From parallel to USB and USB to

G3

From G3 to G4

From G4 to G5

Where will it all end?

I just don’t know.

From analog to digital

And ultra sound to Sense-a-round.

From rat s___ to bat s___

And bat s___ to cat s___

Where it will end no one knows.

My cat sleeps.

I sleep

You sleep

We all sleep

Gadgets rule

Computers reign.

And newness rains down on us

In wave after wave.

While in the background

Faith dies and love flees.

A poem: “Energy Fields…inspired by William Blake”

Is every life a syllogism

An analogy

An algorithm

In all our tries at shaping a commonweal,

Are we just

So many energy fields,

Along with other life forms,

With whom we share attics and dorms

And bedrooms and halls.

Such as lizards, cats, and squirrels;
like seahorses, boys and girls; the really great thing

That we to life’s table bring

Is that we can put out light, motion and heat

Because energy

Is really

the thing

That can’t be beat!

A Poem…”Can this World Beat the Odds?”

Can this world beat the odds

And burn its old gods

And face its future

Rid of its sutures

Its old wounds healed

Its faith congealed

Into something sweeter than today.

Of something much nicer than now…

Will what lives in the hearts
of those who fight death with their art

On today’s soul-pained earth

Prove to be stronger

Than the impossible dearth

Of all that has worth
Of love, life and hope

things at which

we still blindly grope.

A Poem…”Old Cultures and Bold Cultures”

I prefer old cultures to bold cultures,

I like cultures where men dance with men

and good meals end with grateful burps

Where funerals and weddings are for immoderation

And women come with girth

Where Grandpa’s wrath is godlike

And Grandmas help give birth

Where life is a mystery to be lived

And love a party meant for all

A Poem…”On Human Speech”

What if the English were without English

Or the French without francais?

And Spaniards without Spanish

Even for a day?

We all must have our say in a tongue

That is fitting

So we can all get around

Whether standing or sitting

It’s a funny thing this ability

To make our needs known with facility

By twirling our tongues and

Moving our lips

And making sounds soft and hard

So it doesn’t matter if we’re busboy or bard

We won’t have to shuck and jive

When the moment has arrived

To commu-

ni-

cate

A Poem…God Save Us

At first God saved us from small bands of silent men

Stealing through the desert in search of caravans and camel drivers
stealthier and smarter in the ways of the world

As we, a faith-powered few fueled by a new metaphysic went in search of an answer
in a place where heaven-on-earth comes in two flavors: green and wet

God saved us from Ancient Semite cousins living in sun-baked cities made of mud

With walls tall enough to protect but just enough

Ruled by kings with a king’s street smarts if not much else that was kingly

Who knew the politics of rule went over best

With dusk-to-dawn feasts and enemies’ heads

Placed on sticks

From other kin with no unseen God

Who lived in great places and created engineering marvels undreamed of

by Hebrew poet-shephards, wanderers and seers

to whom math was a thing for Greek and Persian

and simple verses of praise and hope the thing for those who loved HaShem.

God saved us from all that was and is Rome

After 2000 years of hell on earth and social death and death-by-ghetto, mosque, cathedral,
Swastika, Stalin and (death by) the conviction of the least vehement of foes and maybe even the best of friends
that we would never be quite out of the top drawer
-this last infinitely more cutting than the death of a
thousand cuts and in its own way more powerful than the killing fields of the OstFront…

And now we live in an age that says you may not hate

Because hate is wrong and

The smell of death camps

was so strong

That hate itself is devoutly to be feared and exterminated

…unless preached with reasoned arguments

spoken by well dressed types on prime time and cable

so if in the end our algorithm-without-end of hate, persecution, death and survival of the Folk

were to poop-out and die

and we were left with no arch bully to fear and to fight

where, then, would we be

and whom then would we love?

Ourselves?

After a breakup

I took my kitty for a walk

In a cold and steady rain

I tried to take my mind off my sorrow

And that sharp and ice cold pain

Of losing the love that made me happy

And was now forever lost

And made me realize the great big secret of love’s

Great big cost

I heard a cry from way down low

That caused me to look down

And there was my little kitty

Wearing an awful frown

She continued to meow and whimper

As she bravely stared me down

But I was in another place and not quite ready yet

To hear the cries

of one so small and so wise

Who night after night curled up with love against my chest

And fixed me with those great big eyes

And had a soul made up of daffodils

And silver moonbeams

And never ending hoping

Whose only wish

Seemed

To be

To get me to stop

My moping

And wants me to look with trust in her great big eyes

So she can carry out

Her task

To let me know

In no uncertain terms

That yes

This too

Shall pass.
